Bad Goisern (sgh) - Sie besteht zu 59 Prozent aus Schotterwegen, zu 13,1 Prozent aus Wald-, Wiesen und Wanderwegen und zu 8,5 Prozent aus Pfaden - die Strecke der UCI MTB Marathon World Championships. Exakt 105,69 Kilometer lang ist sie, mit insgesamt 3.693 Höhenmetern, nur wenig Asphalt, keinem Tragestück, knackigen Anstiegen und den schönsten Trails und Downhills der UNESCO Weltnaturerberegion Dachstein-Hallstatt. Für Rennradfahrer zu schwierig, für Cross Country Biker zu steil, aber für durchschnittlich trainierte Marathonbiker keine unmögliche Mission.

Mit der alten Salzkammergut Trophy Strecke hat die neue 100 Kilometer Distanz gar nichts mehr zu tun. Für die Weltmeisterschaft wurde eine komplett neue Route recherchiert, die gleichzeitig Basis für alle Distanzen der Trophy ist. Um auf die gut 200 Kilometer der Extremdistanz zu kommen, werden zwei Runden gefahren. Einzig die 47 Kilometer Strecke bleibt nahezu unverändert.

Anfang Mai wurde die von der UCI bereits abgenommene WM-Route erstmals von österreichischen Marathonexperten getestet. Ihr Urteil: Eine wahrhaft weltmeisterliche Strecke! "Sie ist mit allem, was einen Marathon Weltmeister auszeichnen sollte, gespickt", sagt Alexander Forstmayr, Rennleiter beim ÖRV. "Steile Anstiege, Kräfte raubende Schmierer - damit meine ich Teilstücke, die nicht sehr steil sind, jedoch durch das hohe Tempo, das die angehenden Weltmeister anschlagen werden, sehr an die Substanz gehen und die, je nachdem wie sich die Profis ihre Körner dort einteilen, einen guten Teil des erträumten Erfolgs ausmachen werden - sowie deftige Downhills, die für manche Straßen- und Hillclimb-Spezialisten eine regelrechte Mutprobe darstellen und den einen oder anderen an die Grenzen seiner Fahrkunst bringen werden."

Diesem Urteil stimmt auch Lisi Hager zu, Race Redakteurin der Mountainbike Revue und selber eine der erfolgreichsten Marathon- und Langstrecken-Fahrerinnen Österreichs. "Ich finde die Strecke großartig, und zwar in allen Belangen: Landschaftlich werden echte "Gusto-Stückerl" abgegrast, fahrtechnisch wird es durch Gamsöfen, Rodlweg und die neu hinzugekommenen Wald-Passagen garantiert lustig, und konditionell ist die Runde durch ihre Mischung aus sehr steilen, bösen und flacheren, dafür zähen Anstiegen ebenfalls eine echte Herausforderung - zumal man sich bergab nur selten ausruhen kann."

Marathonfan Christopf Zach geht sogar noch weiter: "Ich glaube man kann schon im vorhinein von der besten österreichischen Marathon Strecke sprechen. Sie mag vielleicht nicht die schwerste sein, aber man hat hier einen sehr ausgewogenen Marathon geschaffen. Uphills und Downhills begeistern gleichermaßen. Die Highlights sind das Rettenbachtal und natürlich die Ewige Wand. Gut finde ich auch, dass auf eine Tragepassage verzichtet wurde und dass der Asphaltanteil sehr gering ist. Insgesamt eine würdige WM Strecke die das Zeug zum Klassiker hat."

Bad Goisern (sgh) - It consists to 59 per cent of gravel roads, to 13.1 per cent of forest, meadow, and hiking trails and to 8.5 per cent of single track - the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships course. The route has an exact distance of 105.69 kilometres and a total elevation gain of 3.693 vertical metres. It has no hike a bike section, only contains a small amount of sealed road and impresses with steep climbs and some of the most beautiful trails and downhills of the UNESCO world cultural heritage Dachstein-Hallstatt. For road cyclists too difficult, for cross country riders too steep, but for the average trained Marathon biker a mission possible.

With the old Salzkammergut Trophy course, the new 100 kilometre loop has nothing in common. For the World Championships, the organisers have researched a brand new route, which is also the basis for the various Trophy distances. In order to attain 200 kilometres for the extreme distance, the riders must complete two laps. Only the 47 kilometres distance has hardly changed.

In early May, the route which has already been approved by the UCI was tested by Austrian Marathon experts. They judged the course to be truly worthy for a World Championship race. "The route offers everything that a World Champion should be able to cope with”, says Alexander Forstmayr, race director at the Austrian Cycling Federation (ÖRV). "Steep climbs, gruelling ascents - I mean passages that are not too steep but that will, provided that you ride them fast which will be the case during the Worlds, get to you and can eventually kill you - as well as heavy downhills which could scare the life out of some roadies and hill climb specialists who might get to know their limitations during this race.”

Lisi Hager, race editor of Austrian Mountainbike Revue magazine and one of the most successful female Marathon and long distance riders in Austria agrees: "I find the course extraordinary, in every sense of the word: the scenery is amazing, the views are breathtaking. Technically the route is quite demanding and in terms of condition very challenging with its steep climbs and its flatter but mean ascents, especially since you cannot relax in the tough downhill sections.”

Marathon enthusiast Christopf Zach goes even further: "I think one can say that it is the best Austrian marathon course ever. The route may not be the toughest in the country, but it is the perfect cross-section and very unique. Both, uphill and downhill sections are exciting. Its highlights are the Rettenbach valley and of course the "Ewige Wand” (Eternal Wall). I like the fact that the organisers did without a hike a bike passage and that the course does not include much sealed road. Altogether it is a worthy World Championship course with the potential to become an international classic.”

The tourism office Inneres Salzkammergut ships a printed course map on a scale of 1:50.000 on demand starting mid June. The map can be ordered by e-mail under info@trophy.at. The GPS data of the route as well as a detailed road book are will be offered for a minimal fee under www.bike-gps.com after May 28th.
